A 1930's whodunnit with an all-star cast of A-listers. It's been 7 years since David O. Russell's last film Joy & the director/writer returns to form assembling a fantastic ensemble cast but not so much when it comes to the script. The cinematography and 1930s production are outstanding and the performances are great but the movie has a pacing issue with a messy script, a generic villain, and a convoluted plot. You feel invested in this story and characters at first but with many flashbacks and random instances of long and drawn-out scenes of dialogue, it's as if the movie takes a long detour away from the main storyline.
John David Washington shines again as one of the hottest young actors working today and he holds his own flawlessly among other greats like Christian Bale, Robert De Niro, Margot Robbie, and many others. If the script were a bit tighter and cleaned up, this would definitely be a movie worth raving about and even Oscar-worthy. Mike Myers & Michael Shannon steal the show to which you wish the movie spent more time developing the backstories of the more interesting characters.
