Black Adam
Doug Jones | October 26, 2022 | 🍿 7 / 10 🍿
Dwayne Johnson & Black Adam introduce a new phase of the DCEU which will keep fans hopeful for a brighter future for the franchise. While it still suffers from a messy script and an odd act structure, the film has so much to offer in terms of scope, action, and straight-up fun. The post-credit scene lives up to the hype which previews an epic showdown between Black Adam and the return of a heroic icon.
It comes as no surprise that Dwayne Johnson has been trying to get this movie made for quite some and how passionate he is behind this character, I mean after all, he looks like a superhero in real life. However, Dwayne Johnson still can't quite land the "leading man" role just yet. Both his movies and performances work better when he has someone or an ensemble to work off of (like the Jumanji and Fast & Furious movies) but he still has a lot of potential to grow into a solid leading solo performance as he has such amazing charisma and charm.
What this film suffers from the most is an issue some of his other projects also suffer which is a poor script. The dialogue is very uninteresting and not engaging which is a disappointment because we have seen the potential of how great superhero movie scripts can be. With that said, the performances outshine the poor dialogue and everyone in the Justice Society really gives it their all including standouts from Aldis Hodge as Hawkman and Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate. You can tell that they are truly invested in each of their characters and the mission to stand against Black Adam which makes the action scenes even more fun to watch.
The film's strongest strength (other than having The Rock) is that it has much potential to help reshape the DCEU or the "DC Universe" they are calling it after appointing James Gunn and Peter Safran as the new heads of everything DC related at Warner Brothers. Not only does the film dive deeper into the mythology and history of "SHAZAM!" and the council of wizards but it teases what can happen when Black Adam goes face to face with Billy Batson/Shazam when their paths eventually cross. The big setup this film introduces comes with the film's post-credit scene when the return of DC's mightiest swoops in to confront Black Adam and his rageful power.
