Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Doug Jones | November 13, 2022 | 🍿 8.5/ 10 🍿
Ryan Coogler and Marvel have truly done the impossible and followed up 2018's worldwide phenomenon with an epic, fun, beautiful, and emotional sequel that honors the legacy of both Chadwick Boseman and the character of T'Challa. While many believe T'Challa should've been recast and there are many who oppose the recast, one can't deny and not appreciate the amount of respect and love the cast and crew put into the making of this movie.
Wakanda Forever follows the loss of T'Challa Wakanda's King & Black Panther and how his sister Shuri and mother Queen Ramonda have to live in this world without him while facing the threat of the underwater kingdom Talokan led by their leader, Namor who wants to bring a war to Wakanda and the entire surface world. Shuri, Queen Ramonda, Okoye, M'Baku, and Nakia must step up to protect their nation, their people, and stop Namor and the people of Talokan before they rage war against the entire world.
Having to re-write the entire script after the loss of Chadwick Boseman, Director/writer Ryan Coogler and his co-writer Joe Robert Cole deliver a fufilling sequel that introduces a new threatening villian in the MCU but also a soon to be new fan-favorite of Riri Williams "Ironheart" and a lot of fun while perfectly balancing the heavy emotion of loss, grief and the theme of family importance.
Angela Bassett STEALS the show, give her the Oscar right now she is electrifying and puts her all into this performance. You can really feel the impact of loss and heartbreak her character goes through and how she will do anything to protect what's left of her family and legacy. She isn't afraid of the threat of Namor and will have no problem going toe to toe to make sure he and his people will not step foot into Wakanda.
Clocking in at almost 3 hours, the film is long and has a lot to tell in that runtime. There are definitely scenes that could've been trimmed and not included for a bit of a healthier pace. You feel the presence of Chadwick Boseman and the legacy that he left behind and the film without a doubt serves as an enormous tribute to him, especially at the end including the post-credit scene. Whatever they plan on doing next with these characters and franchise is going to be interesting because they set up A LOT of things that can have great potential for the MCU and if Ryan Coogler decides to return to finish his trilogy, there is no doubt he will conclude it masterfully.
