Fun, odd, cringy but at the same time uneven, The People We Hate At The Wedding has its moments but it’s far from the comedy of the year. A great cast that includes the talents of Kristen Bell, Ben Platt, and Allison Janney needs a better script that is written by the Molyneux sisters, (the two head writers of Bob’s Burgers) which suffers from a lack of character development and proper redeemable arcs that don’t feel earned nor wanted. You want to root for these characters and for them to be genuine good humans but they simply can’t share the spotlight and ruin everything that they are involved with. 

The premise is quite interesting, two American siblings and their mother travel to London for their half-sister and daughter’s wedding but tensions rise between the entire family during the week leading up to the big day. The two standouts are Allison Janey and Cynthia Addai-Robinson who play Donna and Eloise the mother and the daughter who is getting married. You can feel the mother-daughter relationship even though a lot of it is estranged and not a typical relationship. They are the only two who aren’t so despicable and are trying to enjoy the quality time of having the entire family in London while Ben Platt and Kristen Bell’s characters want to ruin every moment because they have ongoing personal issues that play a factor into their poor behavior. 

There are definitely moments of genuine humor that would make anyone laugh because it’s relatable to anyone who has ever attended a wedding, especially a destination wedding. It’s fun to find the humor in someone else’s bad luck or situation but after a while, it gets to a point of cringe that you just want to tell the characters enough already or grow up but they can’t seem to care about anyone else but themselves. There is chemistry between the cast but not enough to save this from being another forgettable streaming comedy that no one will be talking about this holiday season.
