Fun but flawed, original but also familiar. Samaritan is a darker, grittier, & somewhat realistic take on the superhero genre. It’s an intriguing premise of what happens if a real-life aging superhero came back during a time of chaos. However, it’s also a film that feels held back by the “PG-13” rating in terms of violence & action but at the same time still very brutal.
Sylvester Stallone proves that even at the age of 76, he’s still an action star with plenty of good performances left in him. The rest of the performances are pretty good for the most part with Pilou Asbæk as a highlight being the film’s villain.
Overall, Samaritan is fun to watch but the film feels unfinished with a lot of questions left unanswered and characters that aren’t fully developed. If the film had a better script this would’ve easily been on more people’s radar and most likely would’ve probably been given a theatrical release and not a direct-to-streaming movie that it was given last minute.
